The Best Cajun Fried Catfish with Creamy Grits

Creamy, crispy, and perfectly kicked-up! One of our mfe at-home chefs, Dee, swears there's nothing better than a southern catfish dish that gives all in one in just a bite!

INGREDIENTS

For the Catfish

  • 2 Catfish fillets
  • 2 teaspoons Cajun seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 3 eggs (beaten)
  • Breadcrumbs (for coating) 
  • Olive oil (for frying)

For the Creamy Grits

  • 1 cup grits
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1/2 cup sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste

 

For the Spicy Sauce & Veggies

  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup chicken broth
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cajun seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 red bell pepper (diced)
  • 1/2 green bell pepper (diced)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2 tablespoons butter

 

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1: Prepare the Grits

  • In a pot, bring 2 cups of water to a simmer.
  • Slowly stir in the grits and cook on low heat for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Once thickened, add butter and cheddar cheese. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.

Step 2: Bread and Fry the Catfish

  • Season the catfish fillets with Cajun seasoning, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, and pepper.
  • Dip the fillets into the beaten eggs, then coat with breadcrumbs.
  • Let the breaded fillets rest for 15 minutes.
  • Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Fry the catfish for 3–4 minutes on each side, or until crispy and golden brown. Remove and set aside.

Step 3: Sauté the Veggies

  • In the same skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter.
  • Add the diced bell peppers and minced garlic. Sauté for 3–4 minutes until softened. Remove and set aside.
Step 4: Make the Creamy Sauce
  • In the skillet, pour in the heavy cream and chicken broth.
  • Add Cajun seasoning, red pepper flakes, and pepper. Simmer for 2–3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.

 

Step 5: Assemble the Dish

  • Spoon the creamy grits onto a plate.
  • Place a fried catfish fillet on top.
  • Garnish with mozzarella cheese then sautéed veggies and drizzle with the creamy sauce.
  • Top with fresh herbs or green onions for added flavor.
